DIY gel electrophoresis buffer. Cheaper and faster than TAE/TBE.
500 mL of 20× sodium borate (SB) buffer concentrate. Dilute to 0.5× working concentration for gel electrophoresis.
SB buffer advantages over TAE/TBE: cheaper (borax is ~$11/kg), runs faster (higher voltage without overheating), produces sharper bands, and the concentrate is stable indefinitely at room temperature.
Makes 20 litres of 0.5× working buffer — enough for hundreds of gel runs.
